Richards wrestling had a great season ending with three wrestlers, Mia Palumbo, Marquis Hall and Rocco Palumbo advancing to State.

Palumbo, who won 4-2, made history as the first female wrestler to ever win a match at the IHSA Illinois State Finals in the tournament’s 80 year history..

“I’ve been wrestling since I was 4 but I didn’t really think I would’ve made it that far into the bracket. I am extremely proud of myself for how I progressed in the season especially with me being a freshman. I’m happy that I’ve gotten to experience it with my brother at the same time,” says Mia Palumbo.

Marquis Hall, senior, who also qualified for state unfortunately dropped his wrestleback 7-2. He also had a huge impact on the team. He was a major product to the program. He’s been qualifying for state since his sophomore year.

“I’ve enjoyed my years as a member on the wrestling team. It gives me peace to know I’ve helped make the season a great season. I liked this season the most because I helped mentor freshman on how to be a good wrestler and what it takes,” said Hall.

The first day down at State had the State qualifiers off to a good start in a 3-0 lead.

“I’m extremely proud of the team this year and the progress they’ve made. We had more commitment and the most support we’ve ever had in which I think helped lead us into the great season that we did have,” says head wrestling coach Nick Grabarek.
