The Richards mathletes started back in August and they’ve been practicing higher level math problems to hopefully make it a great season.

Mathletes coach, Mr. Alexander said “there are a few students who try the Oral Contests where you have to solve a set of problems from a difficult topic, and then verbally explain your answers to the judges, who are two math teachers. It’s like the tables are turned, and the Mathlete becomes the “teacher”!

The mathletes are doing very well this season, lots of the members have tried the oral contests and they are doing well with them. Coach Alexander says “this year, Megan Doon and Valerie Magana have presented for the Frosh/Soph level, and Brian Carpenter, Jason McIntyre and Dan Birmingham have presented at the Jr/Sr level. They’ve all done a great job taking on this tough role”.

There are more things a mathlete can try when competing. Mr. Alexander said “the topics each year vary, but are appropriate for each level. Freshmen deal with a lot of equations of lines; sophomores deal with polynomials and probability; juniors have trigonometry; and seniors have matrices and series & sequences”.

With practice being two to three days a week, the mathletes have been really used their practice time wisely. “the past few years we’ve been in the middle of the pack compared to all 14 schools in the SSC. The Conference Meet is December 6th, and I’d like our team to finish in the top 3!” said coach Alexander.
