Each year, 44,193 American die by suicide. It’s the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. In most cases the victim didn’t feel like they had anyone to go to talk about their problems and they let the stress build up until they reached their breaking point.

To help Richards students deal with stress and manage conflicts Richards has developed the Connections Room where students can talk about issues bothering them rather than letting the stress, anxiety or anger build up.

“Richards offers services for students who feel as though they need someone to talk to about their personal life, current mental state, problems they’re dealing with and etc.” said Mrs. Basich, a staff member at Richards.

Connection is located in the LRC. Students who come to Connections can talk with a counselor  or social worker when they feel as though they are too overwhelmed to attend class.

Counselors and social workers will also help students develop a plan to catch up on their class work.

“When I feel like I’m not mentally capable of going to class and I need to vent about my problems, I talk to the people available in Connections and they really help me feel better,” said Sophomore Katie Prince.

If a student feels like they need to talk to someone, students can ask their classroom teacher for a pass to Connections.

“When a good friend of mine passed away I took it really hard and I wasn’t myself for a while. When I finally reached out for help, the counselors and social workers really helped me get back on my feet and made sure Iw as okay. I’m thankful for the support the school gave me,” said Sophomore Trystan Julian.

Richards staff and adminstration want students to know they are not alone.
